Experience the Mystery

Koa/German Spruce Woodland

This “Woodland Edition” guitar is one of only two special-edition instruments by luthier Jason Simpson. More than two years in the making, these rare works were inspired by Jason’s love for tales of ancient realms, races, and fantastical places. He set out to capture the beauty and elegance of an old, enchanted forest full of mystery and intrigue. Made from some of the finest tonewoods, Jason carefully selected each material to create not only a stunning visual aesthetic but also a magical sound that truly captivates and inspires. The guitars incorporate unique design features that were meticulously executed using a 3D inlay technique, adding an entirely new level of depth and beauty.

From the silky rays of the German spruce top to the flamed koa back and sides, this guitar shines from top to bottom. Jason’s artistic approach was to subtly incorporate intricate design elements while maintaining a balance of simplicity and natural beauty. The entire front is adorned with shimmering paua abalone purfling and crowned with three paua jewels along the centerline. The custom rosette, end graft, and heel cap were inlaid using a multi-layered method, creating a beautiful 3D shadow-box effect that stands apart from traditional inlay work.

Let’s talk about the sound. The SJ model comfortably sits between the OO (smallest) model and the GA (full-size) model, offering impressive volume, projection, and punch for its size. It is very comfortable to hold and play and exemplifies versatility, producing a well-balanced sound across the tonal spectrum. The voice is pure and articulate, with strong fundamental notes and just the right balance of harmonic overtones and sustain—it truly sings.

Its versatility and high responsiveness make it an excellent choice for a wide range of playing styles and approaches. The German spruce top, combined with Jason’s lightweight Adirondack bracing, creates ample headroom while maintaining a lively response to even the lightest touch. You can truly feel that this guitar is alive.

Now let’s talk about playability. With its low-profile, hand-carved neck and low string action, this guitar is a delight to play. You’ll find it effortless to strum for hours, thanks to buttery-smooth stainless steel frets that let you focus on what really matters—creating beautiful music.

If you’re a collector looking for a guitar built for both performance and style, you can’t go wrong with this rare “Woodland Edition” guitar
